U.S. Stocks Surge in May as Trump Retreats from Harsh Tariffs

U.S. equities experienced a robust rally in May, marking the strongest monthly performance since late 2023. The surge came after President Donald Trump rolled back some of his most aggressive tariffs, restoring investor confidence and driving renewed appetite for risk assets.

Strong Monthly Gains

The S&P 500 rose 6.2% in May, its best monthly gain since November 2023. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite jumped 9.6%, placing both indices firmly back in positive territory for the year after a rocky start in April due to tariff fears.

The rally was led by members of the so-called “Magnificent Seven” — including Meta (Facebook’s parent), Tesla, and Nvidia. The chipmaker saw its shares climb after reporting a nearly 70% year-on-year increase in quarterly revenue.

Key Drivers Behind the Rally

Stocks began climbing on April 9 after President Trump announced a 90-day suspension of sweeping tariffs imposed earlier in the month. Investor optimism strengthened in early May as the U.S. and U.K. revealed a new trade deal, followed by a coordinated effort between the U.S. and China to lower tariffs for at least 90 days.

Despite pressure on the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields, markets remained buoyant. Even cryptocurrencies joined the rally — Bitcoin prices soared as high as $111,965 amid speculation that the White House would soon approve its first digital asset regulations.

Skepticism and Legal Uncertainty

Not all investors benefited. Many of Wall Street’s largest funds had reduced their U.S. equity exposure over fears of an impending recession and growing unease over erratic policymaking in Washington.

Skeptics warn that the market’s rebound could be short-lived. On Wednesday, a U.S. court ruled President Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff program unlawful, though a federal appeals court paused the ruling a day later.

Analysts expect Trump to implement new tariffs on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals in the coming weeks. “He has broad authority to act, and we suspect he’ll want to remind people that a court ruling won’t derail his agenda,” said Mike O’Rourke of Jones Trading.

Conclusion

While May marked a bullish turning point for U.S. stocks, uncertainty lingers. Investors remain divided over whether the market rally is sustainable or a temporary reaction to political maneuvering. For now, Wall Street is riding the wave — but volatility may not be far behind.
