Oil Prices Fall for a Fifth Straight Day as Trump Cites Progress in Iran Talks

Published September 23, 2026 · Finance-Solutes.com Markets Desk

Oil prices fell for a fifth consecutive session on Tuesday. President Donald Trump said the US held a lengthy meeting with Iranian officials at the United Nations General Assembly. The losing streak has erased more than 4% of crude’s value this week. Prices remain up over 9% for the month.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, settled down 1% at $99.25 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) shed 1.2% to close at $94.59. Traders are weighing signs of diplomatic progress with Iran against early steps toward restarting a key Saudi Arabian export pipeline.

Market snapshot (September 22, 2026 close): Brent crude settled at $99.25/barrel (-1%); WTI settled at $94.59/barrel (-1.2%). Oil markets are moving quickly on Iran diplomacy and Saudi pipeline repairs. Always check live pricing before acting on any figures here.

Trump Signals Progress, Calls It a “Big Decision”

Trump told reporters the US delegation met with Iran’s team for three hours at the UN General Assembly in New York. He called it “a very good meeting.” He made the comment during a separate bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also attending the UN gathering this week.

In his own UN address, Trump said he faces a “big decision.” He must choose between pursuing a negotiated deal with Iran or escalating the conflict further. He added that he expects a deal after the US midterm elections in November. Trump also said US forces have escorted a large volume of oil through the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks. He argued that traffic through the waterway is higher than at any point since the conflict began.

Saudi Arabia Moves to Restart the East-West Pipeline

There are also early signs that Middle East supply could improve this week. Saudi Arabia has begun the initial stages of restarting its East-West pipeline, according to Reuters. The kingdom is aiming to restore meaningful flow toward the Red Sea by Saturday. The pipeline was reportedly already pumping oil at a low rate. Exports from the Red Sea port of Yanbu could resume within days.

The pipeline carries crude roughly 1,200 kilometers from Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province to Yanbu. It has been offline since a September 10 drone attack that Saudi authorities said originated in Iraq. During the outage, Riyadh rerouted crude back through the Strait of Hormuz, adding to traffic through the contested waterway.

What This Means for Investor Portfolios

  • Energy exposure stays a two-way trade. A sustained pullback in oil prices would ease cost pressure on transport and consumer-facing sectors. It could also compress margins for energy producers.
  • Watch the Saudi pipeline timeline closely. A full restart by the weekend would add meaningful supply back to the market. That could accelerate the current price slide.
  • Diplomatic headlines will keep driving short-term volatility. Any sign that talks stall, or that a deal slips well past the midterms, could quickly reverse this week’s losses.
  • Hormuz remains the key chokepoint to track. Elevated traffic through the strait is a bullish signal for near-term supply, but the route stays vulnerable to renewed disruption.
