Gold is set to overtake the euro as the world’s second most important reserve asset, following a surge in central bank demand and record-high prices, according to a report by the European Central Bank (ECB) released Wednesday.
Gold Now Second Only to the U.S. Dollar
ECB data shows that gold accounted for 20% of official global reserves in 2023, surpassing the euro’s 16%. The U.S. dollar remained dominant at 46%. This shift is driven by record-breaking central bank purchases for the third consecutive year—over 1,000 tonnes annually—doubling the average seen during the 2010s.

Historic Levels of Gold Accumulation
Global central banks now hold around 36,000 tonnes of gold, approaching the post-WWII Bretton Woods era peak of 38,000 tonnes. Top gold buyers in 2023 included India, China, Turkey, and Poland, according to the World Gold Council.

Price Surge Fuels Gold’s Ascent
Gold prices surged 30% in 2023 and have already climbed another 27% in 2024, hitting a record $3,500 per troy ounce. This price boost, along with strategic accumulation, helped gold surpass the euro as the second-largest reserve asset by market value.
Geopolitical Shifts Driving De-Dollarization
The ECB report highlights a growing move away from the U.S. dollar, particularly among emerging economies, due to concerns over U.S. sanctions and geopolitical instability.
Many central banks began accumulating gold as a hedge against sanctions, especially after the Russia-Ukraine war triggered asset freezes.
In fact, in 5 of the top 10 years for gold reserve increases since 1999, the countries involved had faced sanctions in the same or prior year.

A Shift in Gold’s Role
Although gold doesn’t yield interest and is costly to store, its liquidity, political neutrality, and safety have elevated its role in reserve strategies. Interestingly, the traditional negative correlation between gold and real yields has broken down since 2022, as geopolitical risk now overshadows inflation concerns in gold buying behavior.

Conclusion
With rising demand and evolving monetary strategies, gold is reclaiming its role as a global reserve powerhouse, second only to the U.S. dollar. As central banks seek safe havens beyond traditional assets, 2024 marks a turning point in global financial architecture — and gold is at its center.
