Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, the U.S. has become increasingly attractive to cryptocurrency companies. With promises to turn the country into the “crypto capital” of the world, more firms are eyeing the U.S. as a key market. Among them, Deribit, the largest cryptocurrency options exchange, is the latest to consider entering the U.S. market.
Deribit’s Move to the U.S.
Deribit, which processed approximately $1.3 trillion in trades last year, is actively reassessing its strategy to expand in the U.S. The company, headquartered in Dubai, is exploring potential opportunities in the U.S. after recent regulatory shifts that show a more favorable stance toward crypto.

CEO Luuk Strijers highlighted that the company’s interest in the U.S. market has been boosted by the changing regulatory environment under Trump, signaling a more crypto-friendly approach. This shift follows a significant transformation in how the U.S. government interacts with the cryptocurrency sector.
Rising Interest from Global Crypto Firms
Other cryptocurrency firms from Europe and Asia are also moving to establish a presence in the U.S. Companies like Seychelles-based OKX, Bulgaria’s Nexo, Switzerland’s Wintermute, and Dubai’s DWF Labs are all planning to open offices in the U.S.
These companies are seeing the U.S. economy through a new lens, thanks to Trump’s active outreach to the industry. After the collapse of FTX in November 2022, U.S. regulators, under the Biden administration, had taken a hardline approach against the industry. However, Trump’s encouragement has made the U.S. appear more welcoming for digital asset firms to operate.

Regulatory Shifts Under Trump’s Leadership
Since Trump’s election, there have been significant changes in the regulatory landscape. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has dropped or paused numerous cases against crypto companies for alleged violations of federal securities laws. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) recently announced the dissolution of its cryptocurrency enforcement unit, a move signaling less regulatory scrutiny.
Trump and his family have also engaged in crypto investments, including stablecoins, bitcoin mining, and memecoins, further supporting the industry’s growth in the U.S.

Global Crypto Exchanges’ Expansion Plans
OKX, one of the largest crypto exchanges, has announced plans to set up its U.S. headquarters in San Jose, California. This move comes just months after the company agreed to pay $504 million to settle charges with U.S. authorities for processing over $5 billion in suspicious transactions. Nexo, which settled with the SEC for $45 million in 2023, is also exploring U.S. expansion.
Binance.US, an independent entity of the world’s largest exchange, resumed accepting dollar deposits and withdrawals after a temporary halt due to regulatory concerns. Meanwhile, DWF Labs is setting up operations in New York and has invested $25 million in a cryptocurrency token supported by Trump’s family.

Challenges Remain for U.S. Market Entry
Despite the more crypto-friendly environment, companies still face challenges in the U.S. Deribit’s Strijers emphasized the complexities of offering derivatives in the U.S. market. The U.S. remains a challenging environment for offering derivative products, which dominate the global crypto trading market.
Arnab Sen, CEO of GFO-X, an exchange based in the UK, pointed out that large institutions worldwide are eager to enter the crypto market, but only in a regulated and safe environment. However, he added that opening offices in the U.S. doesn’t guarantee success, as some firms may prefer to stay outside the country due to political uncertainties.

Conclusion
While President Trump’s crypto-friendly stance has made the U.S. more attractive to cryptocurrency companies, significant challenges remain. The regulatory landscape, although improving, still poses obstacles for businesses trying to penetrate the U.S. market. Nevertheless, with many companies looking to expand, the U.S. could become a key hub for cryptocurrency innovation and growth in the coming years.
