What Is a Masternode? How many of you have heard the term “Masternode” and wondered what it means in the crypto market? Is it a legitimate investment method that can help you earn passive income?
In today’s article, Forex will explore every aspect of Masternodes, a fascinating investment channel in the cryptocurrency market. If you’re curious about how Masternodes work, don’t miss the detailed breakdown below!
WHAT IS MASTERNODE TECHNOLOGY?
A Masternode is defined as a management hub within certain cryptocurrency networks. It requires an initial collateral of tokens to operate and plays a crucial role in specific blockchains, especially during transaction validation.
So, what exactly is a Masternode, and why are so many people interested in learning about it? In reality, many are curious about Masternodes because they are seen as a potential investment method capable of providing passive income.
Talking about Masternodes and passive income might make you think of scams. However, don’t approach it with that mindset. Even with limited free time, you can still legally participate in the crypto market through Masternode investments.

Why is it considered a source of passive income? Because with Masternodes, you won’t need to spend your time on executing trades or researching the market to find the best new coins.
What is a Masternode?
Masternode is a combination of “Master” and “node.” Simply put, they are high-level nodes or servers.
So, what exactly is a Masternode when, at its core, it remains a server or node in the Blockchain network? The answer lies in a number of special features that set them apart from regular nodes, such as maintaining the blockchain, relaying transactions, enhancing privacy for transactions, ensuring instant transaction approval, managing various changes within the network, and even executing smart contracts.

At this point, we can understand that higher-level devices than Masternodes are the first to execute the protocol, while other coins are tasked with replicating it.
To operate a Masternode, investors need to stake a certain amount of coins in exchange for rewards when each blockchain block is created.
How to Own a Masternode Crypto
To own and operate a Masternode, you need to:
- Perform Masternode staking, which involves depositing a large number of coins, such as 1,000 or 10,000 coins.
- Prepare a Linux server capable of running 24/7 to act as your Masternode.
- Ensure the Masternode has a dedicated IP address so other nodes in the network can connect and access it.
Be aware of any specific requirements depending on the type of coin, but the points above are common suggestions provided by Forex.

By now, you’ve likely realized that this investment method is not ideal for beginners. Instead, it’s better suited for experienced individuals or IT professionals who can more effectively set up the required infrastructure.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
What are the benefits of Masternodes? You are guaranteed to receive a percentage of the rewards every time a block is added to the blockchain. The specific percentage depends on the coin and the rules in place. However, these rewards are typically sent directly to the wallet address linked to your node, making it highly convenient.

The rewards you receive will vary depending on multiple factors, so it’s clear that you must calculate them based on aspects such as the rise or fall of coin value, the number of coins you receive, and the reward cycle. All these factors should be considered to help you calculate and predict the profits you can earn from Masternodes.
How Does This Relate to PoW and PoS? You might think that by maintaining a blockchain network, you’re earning block rewards. This is quite similar to Proof of Stake (PoS) because you need to stake or deposit a certain amount of funds. If you withdraw this deposit at any time, the Masternode will be immediately removed from your network.
However, Masternodes are not strictly a form of PoS coins. For instance, in the case of Bitcoin, miners protect the blockchain and receive 100% of the block rewards. A node’s role is to store, validate, and share the blockchain but does not earn any rewards, making it unappealing for many.
In contrast, Dash was the first cryptocurrency to incentivize investors to store funds using the concept of Masternodes. Specifically, Dash established a two-tier model where miners receive 45% of the block rewards, while higher-tier Masternodes also receive 45% of the block rewards. For Dash Masternodes, collateral requirements can be as high as several thousand Dash coins to set up.

In addition, Masternode is set up to encourage participation in the network and increase security for the following reasons:
- It costs a lot to set up a node, so the cost will be too high for an individual to own the majority of Masternodes and then control the network with 51%.
- The high initial cost encourages fair and legitimate participation, as clearly, you have invested a lot and do not want the coin to lose value due to issues in the network and members deciding to sell them.
The profit percentage from Masternodes will tend to decrease as more nodes join the network; however, the profit does not decrease because the coin’s value increases.
Some disadvantages of Masternodes include the following:
- High investment cost for a Masternode
- Difficult to diversify investment due to high capital requirements
- Some projects add Masternodes solely to raise more investment capital
- Requires experience and research to choose a potential and legitimate project
GUIDE TO CHOOSING MASTERNODE
There are many websites that help you choose a Masternode to invest in, but Forex will suggest some criteria you need to pay attention to when choosing a Masternode:

- The vision and the coin they are trying to develop
- The activities of the development team (Is there a GitHub commitment? Are they active in developing the project?)
- The community supporting the Masternode coin
These are all important aspects that you need to pay attention to when mining Masternodes. Surely, no one invests a large amount of money into any Masternode without doing proper research.
CAN A SMALL CAPITAL STILL MINE MASTERNODES?
What if you want to invest but don’t have enough financial resources to own your own Masternode?
To solve this problem, Masternode pools were created, where members pool their coins together until the necessary capital is reached, and they are usually managed by a third party.
This third party will be responsible for distributing payments to the members of the Masternode pool. This method can be risky as a fraudulent team might abscond with your coins.
An improvement of Masternode pools is through smart contracts. Clearly, this method is being promoted by some projects, and the level of security for investors will be much higher compared to the traditional third-party management model.
