US Stock Futures Edge Higher as Weak Jobs Data Cools Fed Rate Hike Bets
Published October 5, 2026 · Finance-Solutes.com Research Desk
US stock futures edged higher on Sunday evening after Wall Street closed higher on Friday. A weaker than expected jobs report has reduced bets that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates again at its October meeting. However, high Treasury yields and oil prices above $100 a barrel are limiting the gains.
As of 00:06 GMT on Monday, S&P 500 futures rose 0.1% to 7,784.0 points. Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.3% to 31,148.0 points. Dow Jones futures traded 0.1% higher at 51,513.0 points.
Investor takeaway: Soft hiring has lowered the odds of an October rate hike, which supports rate sensitive technology stocks. Even so, oil near $100 and elevated bond yields keep inflation risk alive, so the rally may stay fragile.
Wall Street Closes Higher on Friday
US stocks ended Friday in positive territory. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.2%, the S&P 500 gained 0.7% to close at 7,722.72, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.5%.
The weaker labor market helped technology shares, which are sensitive to interest rates. Lower expectations for rate hikes tend to support the valuations of growth companies.
What the September Jobs Report Showed
The US Labor Department reported that employers added only 29,000 jobs in September. Economists had expected roughly 84,000 to 90,000. The unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1%.
The government also revised earlier data lower. July and August payrolls were cut by a combined 60,000 jobs. Together, the numbers point to a labor market that is cooling faster than forecasters expected.
Fed Rate Hike Odds Fall
The report changed how traders view the Fed’s next move. The central bank raised its benchmark rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4.00% in September. That was its first increase since July 2023.
After the jobs data, traders reduced their bets on another hike at the October 27 and 28 meeting. According to CME FedWatch, the market now prices roughly an 80% chance that the Fed holds rates steady. The exact probability has moved between about 77% and 83% across reports, so check the live tool before relying on it.
Oil and Bond Yields Cap the Rally
The gains in US stocks face pressure from the bond market. Treasury yields initially fell after the jobs report but then reversed higher. Investors worry that expensive energy could keep inflation above the level the Fed is comfortable with.
Oil remains the main risk to markets. The conflict involving Iran continues to disrupt energy supply, and Brent crude has traded above $100 a barrel. A prolonged disruption could complicate the Fed’s policy path, even as hiring slows.
Third Quarter Earnings Season Begins
Investors are also turning to the start of third quarter earnings season. Company results will show whether high borrowing costs and energy prices are hurting profit expectations. Guidance from management teams may matter as much as the headline numbers.
What This Means for Your Portfolio
- Growth stocks may benefit from lower hike odds. A softer labor market can ease pressure on valuations, but only if yields stop climbing.
- Energy prices cut both ways. High oil supports producers but raises costs for airlines, transport firms and consumers.
- Bond yields remain a key signal. A renewed rise in Treasury yields could quickly offset the benefit of weaker jobs data.
- Diversification matters more than prediction. Mixed signals from jobs, inflation and oil make it hard to time a single move.
What to Watch Next
- The Fed meeting on October 27 and 28, and any shift in CME FedWatch odds before then.
- Brent crude and Treasury yields, which react quickly to news from the Middle East.
- Early third quarter earnings and company comments on costs and demand.
